Why custom soft comes first
Part 04 · 01For patientsA custom soft lens holds its shape, goes in easily and keeps night vision clear.
Easy handling
A thick-centred soft lens holds its shape, so insertion is easy.
Small RGPs
Plus RGPs must stay small (about 9.2–9.3 mm), which shrinks the optic zone.
Lens drop
Weight and movement let the RGP drop, so the edge of the optic zone crosses the pupil.
Night glare
With the pupil edge uncovered, patients notice glare at night.
What happens when a plus RGP drops
Part 04 · 02A small, heavy plus lens sits low. Once it drops, the top of the pupil falls outside the optic zone, and that uncovered edge is where night glare comes from.
Illustrative only: about a 9.2 mm lens, 6.5 mm optic zone, dropped about 1.6 mm, with a 6 mm night pupil.
Why hyperopia is different
Part 04 · 03Myopia and astigmatism gain optics and stability from RGPs. Plus RGPs have to stay small, so the optic zone is small, and any drop pushes its edge across the pupil.
