Rigid lenses only
Part 03 · 01For patientsA rigid lens gives steadier, sharper vision than a soft toric, without the vision drifting during the day.
Better optics
RGP optics give sharper vision than soft torics at high cylinder.
Better stability
With back-surface or bitoric RGPs, the more toric the cornea, the better the lens stabilises.
Vision that drifts
Lens thickness at these powers makes vision vary through the day.
Mild irritation
The top-to-bottom thickness difference from prism ballast causes mild irritation.
We don’t use soft torics for high cylinder. The stabilisation point applies to back-surface and bitoric RGP designs, not soft torics.
Why this differs from high hyperopia
Part 03 · 02Like high myopia, high astigmatism gains optics and stability from a rigid lens. High plus RGPs have to stay small and tend to drop, so high hyperopia usually starts with custom soft.
