How we test, and how it’s treated
A binocular vision assessment measures how the eyes aim, focus and hold together. Treatment starts with the simplest option that works.
What we measure
Part 04 · 01Cover test
At distance and near. Reveals phorias and tropias, their size and direction.
Near point of convergence
How close the eyes can turn in before one drifts out.
Fusional vergence ranges
How much reserve is available to hold a phoria straight.
Accommodative amplitude and facility
How strongly and how quickly the eyes refocus.
AC/A ratio
How much turning in each unit of focusing effort drives.
Cycloplegic refraction
Eye drops relax focusing to uncover hidden long-sightedness.
Simplest options first
Part 04 · 02Glasses first
Correct the prescription, including plus lenses or bifocals for an inward turn driven by focusing.
Vision therapy
Particularly for convergence insufficiency. In-clinic sessions plus home exercises.
Prism
Used in selected cases to ease the effort of holding the eyes together.
Referral
To an eye specialist for a surgical opinion when a turn is constant or large.
Vision therapy at WA Eye Care
Part 04 · 03We run vision therapy in the clinic, backed by home exercises between visits. In-clinic sessions train the eyes to aim and focus together under guidance; the home program keeps the practice going between sessions.
We re-measure at each review: near point, vergence ranges, focusing and symptoms. So you can see whether it’s working, not just how it feels.
Notes for referring optometrists
For optometristsAny child with an eso
Or suspected latent hyperopia. Measure the deviation at distance and near, with and without full correction.
Office-based therapy
Office-based vergence and accommodative therapy with home reinforcement has the strongest evidence. We run both.
With the referral
Refraction, cover test findings, NPC and any vergence ranges. We send the patient back to you for their ongoing care.
Key takeaways
Part 04- 01The assessment measures aiming, focusing and the link between them.
- 02Glasses come first; vision therapy is in clinic and at home.
- 03Constant or large turns are referred for a surgical opinion.
